How are dividends from Cyprus companies taxed?

Cyprus taxes dividends differently, depending on whether or not you are a Cyprus Tax Resident or not or if you are a Cyprus Tax Resident but non domicile!

That’s a great question and the answer depends on who the recipient of the dividends is!

The easier way to look at it is if you are not living in Cyprus your dividends will be 100% tax free. However, this changes when the shareholders reside in Cyprus!

My wife and I own and operate  a growing video game studio together and are considering moving ourselves and our business to Cyprus  for a mixture of tax and lifestyle reasons.

We and the business are currently located in the USA and are the only employees or owners (though we do have a number (around a dozen) of independent contractors, as well). I'm American (by Birth and nationality), and my wife is Dutch (also by birth and nationality.)

Non-Domiciled Rule. What does it mean for me?

The non-domiciled rule is a clever tax law which was introduced by the Cyprus Income Tax office few years ago and it is a tax status for individuals who have not been living in Cyprus 12 out of the last 20 years.

Benefits of this tax status?

Individuals who are living in Cyprus and are tax residents but not domiciled are not subject to special defense tax which applies to dividend income, interest income and rental income.

Therefore, an individual with worldwide dividend income is entitled to tax free dividends
